Sunset Flight to Knik Glacier

A good family friend, Don DeVoe, is a pilot here Anchorage.  According to my dad, who has known him for many years, Don is one of the best pilots around—and that says a lot, given how many experienced bush pilots there are in Alaska. I’ve been lucky enough to make it on Don’s list of people to call when he wants to take his Piper Family Cruiser for a spin, and while I don’t always have the time, it’s a real treat whenever I do get to go.

I recently joined Don for a sunset flight to the Knik Glacier, about 45-minutes away from Anchorage by air.  The views took my breath away.  We landed on one of many unofficial dirt strips near the glacier (this airplane seems to be able to off-road just as well as any Jeep), and being far from civilization, we had the entire valley to ourselves.  We couldn’t stay long because the light was fading quickly, but I’m already dreaming of getting back to this magical place someday.
