Barclay Lake is a classic backpacking destination for first timers, those with kids, and anyone seeking epic mountain views and an inviting alpine lake with very little effort required to get there.

At only 2.2 miles to the lake (4.4 miles roundtrip) and just 500 feet of gain, this trail is one of the easiest around. But the terrain makes it feel like a true wilderness adventure, especially for the littles. I’ve always thought that the trail to Barclay Lake has the feel of a more serious Cascade hike, nestled in the thick old growth forest, replete with river crossings and peek-a-boo views of the towering massif of Mount Baring towards the end.

When you reach the end of the lake, it’s time to start looking for campsites (or a nice spot for lunch, if you’re just there for the day). We arrived early afternoon on a Friday and found that one of the very first spots was open. It had space for three or four tents and perfect access to the lake: our very own private sandy beach. The kids were in paradise.

After an afternoon of splashing, sand castles, and sunscreen (who needs the tropics?), it was time to set up camp for the night. This is always one of my favorite parts. Like all true nomads, our family has learned that you can make any place feel like home.

In between mealtimes and playing make believe amidst the moss-covered logs and overgrown ferns, we had plenty of time to explore. We walked the length of the lake, checking out different campsites along the way (there were many). The kiddos also enjoyed using the backcountry privy, nestled in the trees high above the lake.

This is a magical place. I loved its solitude before having kids, and now I cherish the new memories we’re making together and the imagination it sparks in their growing minds. Before we left, the oldest said, “I wish we could stay here forever.”
